
Alabama’s Riley Tanner Qualifies for 2023 FIFA World Cup with Panama National Team

Tanner scored Panama’s second goal against Papua New Guinea in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Recent Alabama graduate Riley Tanner qualified for her first World Cup appearance as a member of the Panama National Team. Panama is one of three teams making its first-ever appearance in the tournament, advancing out of FIFA's inaugural Play-Off Tournament.
The playoff tournament featured 10 teams split into three groups with the winner of each group earning a spot at the 2023 FIFA World Cup. Competing in the four-team bracket, Panama topped Papua New Guinea, 2-0, in the semifinals, before taking a 1-0 win over Paraguay to win the group and secure a spot in the World Cup.

Tanner scored Panama's second goal in its 2-0 semifinal victory over Papua New Guinea. After collecting the ball outside the box, Tanner dribbled past three defenders before blasting the ball into the right side of the net.
Tanner and the Panama National Team will make their World Cup debut on July 24 against Brazil. The team will play in Group F against France, Jamaica and Brazil.
