BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama swimmer Derek Maas was named the Southeastern Conference's 2023 Swimming and Diving Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The announcement marks the sixth time in the last eight years, and seventh overall, that a member of the Crimson Tide men's team has earned the honor.
A graduate student from Holland, Mich., Maas is currently pursuing his MBA after earning his undergraduate degree in biology. He has a 4.0 grade point average in both degrees. Heading into the SEC Swimming & Diving Championships, Maas ranked ninth in the nation in the 100 breaststroke, 33rd in the 200 breaststroke and 40th in the 200 IM. He received All-American honors in both breaststroke events in 2020 and in the 200 and 400 medley relays in 2021. Maas is a three-time member of the Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll. He was also named a CSCAA Scholar All-American and a CoSIDA Academic All-American twice in his career.
Earlier this week, Maas was also named to the 2023 SEC Men's Community Service Team – his first time earning the recognition for his work in the Tuscaloosa community.
Actively competing in the SEC Championships, the Crimson Tide's men currently sit in sixth place with 354 points with two days left in the meet. Maas and the 200 freestyle relay squad recently finished seventh in College Station, Texas, clocking a season-best time of 1:17.26 on Wednesday night.
