No. 10 in LEARFIELD Director's Cup Standings Following Fall Season
We're off to a great start in the LEARFIELD Director's Cup standings, coming in at No. 10 in the first installment of the rankings. Proud of the job our fall sports did to set the tone for the season!
Basketball on a Roll
Our men's team is on an eight-game winning streak while our women's team has won its last three contests as we head into the final week of January. This morning, it was announced that our men moved up to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 Poll, which is our highest ranking since the 2002-03 season. Only a handful of opportunities left to catch both teams in action at home this season, beginning tonight with our women facing No. 3 LSU at 6 p.m. CT. Our men are back in Coleman on Wednesday, taking on Mississippi State at 8 p.m. CT. Tickets can be purchased through the Alabama Ticket Office online or by calling 205-348-2262.
Cheer and Dance Earn Trio of Top-Three Finishes at Nationals
Congratulations to our cheer and dance squads for placing in the top three in three different categories at the UCA and UDA College Nationals last week. The All-Girl Partner Stunt team finished in second, while the All-Girl Cheer squad finished third as did the Dance Team in the game day competition. In addition to those finishes, the coed cheer team placed sixth while the dance team placed ninth in the jazz competition.
Three Soccer Players Selected in NWSL Draft
Following the best season in program history, our women's soccer team saw three of its own selected in the National Women's Soccer League Draft on January 12. Reyna Reyes was the first Crimson Tide selection off the board, going fifth overall to the Portland Thorns. From there, Riley Tanner and Riley Mattingly Parker went back-to-back at No. 30 and No. 31 to the Washington Spirit and Racing Louisville FC, respectively. We were one of just three programs to have three players selected and the first SEC team to have three players drafted the same year since 2015.
Swimming and Diving Competes in Season's Final Dual Meet
Our men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in their final dual meet of the season Friday at Auburn, where the women came out on top, 155-145, after winning 10 individual events and both relays. The squad will return to Auburn for an invitational February 3-4 before heading to Bryan College Station, Texas, for the SEC Championships, which begin on February 14 and end on February 18.
Pair of Successful Weekends for Tennis
Six matches, six wins for our Crimson Tide tennis teams following the first two weekends of the dual-match season. Our men hosted a pair of doubleheaders, defeating Samford (7-0), Mercer (6-1), UAB (5-2) and Chattanooga (7-0) while the women have earned wins over Navy (6-1) and Memphis (4-3) to start. The men are back at home this weekend, hosting Michigan State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the women hit the road for the first time, traveling to California to take on San Diego State and UC San Diego.
Indoor Track and Field Season Continues
A total of nine meet records were set by our track and field team last Friday at the Samford Invitational. In total, we won 15 events, nine on the women's side and six on the men's, while adding 29 top-five finishes. The indoor season rolls on this weekend, splitting up to compete in Boston, Mass. at the John Thomas Terrier Classic and in Clemson, S.C. in the Bob Pollock Invitational.
Gymnastics Readies for Meet at Kentucky
Gymnastics, under the direction of first-year head coach Ashley Johnston, opened its season with a pair of wins, first at home over Michigan State followed by a road win at Arkansas. After falling last time out to Florida, we are back at it this weekend, taking on Kentucky in Lexington on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The next opportunity to see our team at home is Friday, February 3 as we host Auburn for the Power of Pink meet.
A-Day Set for April 22
Our annual Golden Flake A-Day Spring Football Game is set for Saturday, April 22 in Bryant-Denny Stadium. A game time has not yet been decided, but we will be sure to communicate that out as soon as it's available.
