
Alabama in 12th Following Opening Day of SEC Men’s Golf Championships

The Crimson Tide will enter Thursday’s second round just five strokes back of seventh place
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Alabama men's golf team finished the opening round of the 2022 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships with a team total of 10-over par 290 to end the day in 12th overall. The tournament is being played on the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.
Despite the struggles on day one, the Crimson Tide are just five shots back of the match play cut line, which is at 285 where Mississippi State and Kentucky are currently tied for seventh. Meanwhile, Missouri and Florida are tied for fifth at 285.
Following 54 holes of stroke play from all 14 teams, the top eight teams will advance to match play quarterfinals. Both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be held Saturday, followed by the championship match Sunday on SEC Network.
The Highlights
- Three Crimson Tide golfers finished within a shot of one another, led by Thomas Ponder's 1-over par 71 while Canon Claycomb and JP Cave each carded 2-over 72s
- Ponder is in a tie for 20th overall entering the second round, while Claycomb and Cave are tied for 34th
- Graduate transfer Charlie Nikitas is in a tie for 57th after carding a round of 75, while Dillon West rounds out the starting five with an 81 (70th)
The Field
- The top four teams are the only teams to shoot under par on day one, led by No. 3 Vanderbilt's opening round of 7-under 273
- The Commodores hold a three-shot lead over No. 12 Georgia (276), while No. 25 LSU (277) and No. 19 Texas A&M (279) are among the other teams to shoot below par
- The 2022 SEC Championship field includes 10 of the nation's top-25 teams, with all 14 teams ranked in the top 65 according to Golfstat.com's most recent rankings
- Reigning SEC champion No. 3 Vanderbilt leads the tournament field, with No. 10 Arkansas, No. 12 Georgia, No. 15 Auburn, No, 16 Florida, No. 18 Tennessee, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 21 Ole Miss, No. 22 South Carolina and No. 25 LSU joining them in the top 25
