
Alabama Completes Second Day of Action at the SEC Men’s Golf Championships

The Crimson Tide is in 14th overall entering Friday’s final round
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Alabama men's golf team completed the second round of play at the 2022 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships on Thursday, ending the day in 14th place overall with a 36-hole total of 592 (290-292).
The Crimson Tide was led by Charlie Nikitas who is competing in his first SEC Championships and finished Thursday's second round with a 1-over par 71. Junior Thomas Ponder carded the team's second-best round to maintain his position as the highest UA golfer on the individual leaderboard.
Following Friday's final round of stroke play, the 14-team field will be trimmed to the top eight teams for match play, which begins Saturday morning.
The Highlights
- Nikitas' 1-over par 71 came on the strength of two birdies and just three bogeys, shooting even-par on the back nine
- The graduate student is tied for 54th place overall with a two-day total of 6-over par 144 (75-71)
- Ponder's 73 followed his team-leading 71 from Wednesday, positioning himself in a tie for 48th overall to lead UA
- JP Cave is tied with Nikitas for 54th overall after he carded a 4-over 74 in round two to finish at 6-over 146 (72-74) after 36 holes of action
- Canon Claycomb, who entered the event ranked No. 65 in the nation, is in a tie for 58th with a two-day total of 7-over par 147 (72-75) – the highest 36-hole of the season for the Crimson Tide standout
- Jack Goldasich, who replaced Dillon West in the Tide's starting lineup, shot a 4-over par 74
The Field
- No. 3 Vanderbilt leads the 14-team field at 13-under par 547, four strokes ahead of No. 16 Florida at 9-under par 551
- LSU trail the Gators by two strokes at 7-under 553, followed by No. 19 Texas A&M at 6-under par 554 and No. 14 Auburn at 4-under par 556 to round out the top five
- The 2022 SEC Championship field includes 10 of the nation's top-25 teams, with all 14 teams ranked in the top 65 according to Golfstat.com's most recent rankings
