Canon Claycomb Leads Alabama in the Opening Day of Augusta Haskins Award Invitational

Claycomb and JP Cave finished the opening 36 holes among the top 30
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Alabama junior Canon Claycomb carded rounds of 73 and 70 to lead the men's golf team in the opening day of the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational Saturday. The junior will enter Sunday's final round in a tie for 21st place, while the Crimson Tide finished the opening 36 holes tied for 11th place with a team score of 8-over par 584 (297-287).
Claycomb carded a team-best seven birdies across the two rounds to finish the day as the only Crimson Tide golfer under-par at 1-under 143. The junior leads the Tide for the season in stroke average (70.61) and is looking for his sixth consecutive top-25 finish this weekend.
JP Cave joins Claycomb in the top 30 heading into Sunday's final 18 holes, carding rounds of 74 and 71 on Saturday to tie for 29th on the individual leaderboard.
The two-day, 54-hole event is being held on the par-72, 7,086-yard Forest Hills Country Club Course in Augusta, Ga., just a few miles away from the famed Augusta National course which will be hosting The Masters next weekend.
The Highlights
- Claycomb fired a 1-over 73 over the opening 18 holes before a 2-under par 70 in the second round, finishing the day in a tie for 21st at 1-under par 143
- Claycomb has finished in the top 25 in five consecutive tournaments, including every event in the spring season thus far
- Cave carded a 2-over 74 in the opening 18 holes of play before posting a 1-under par 71 in the second round to surge into the top 30. He will enter Sunday's final round tied for 29th place at 1-over par 145
- Thomas Ponder shot an even-par 72 in the opening 18 holes, the lowest round of anyone in the Tide's lineup, but struggled in the second round and is in a tie for 49th overall with a 5-over 149
- Ponder is coming off the fifth top-10 finish of his career at the Linger Longer invitational
- Charlie Nikitas closed the day strong with an even-par 72 in the second round after carding a 7-over 78 in the opening round, tying for 59th overall
- Jack Goldasich finished the day at 8-over 152 (78-74), to round out the Tide's lineup in 63rd
The Field
- No. 12 Texas dominated the field on the opening day of play, finishing the first 36 holes at 38-under par 538 after firing off rounds of 16-under 272 and 22-under 266
- No. 2 Oklahoma State trails the Longhorns by 26 strokes, finishing the day in second place at 22-under par 554 (276-278)
- No. 13 Notre Dame rounds out the top three at 15-under par 561 (278-283), followed by Illinois at 11-under 565 (287-278) and South Carolina at 8-under 568 (288-280).
- The 15-team field features eight of the nation's top-50 teams, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 12 Texas, No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 24 Illinois, No. 28 South Carolina, No. 35 University of North Florida, No. 37 Alabama and No. 45 Northwestern. Augusta University, UCF, Furman, Georgia State, Mercer, Navy and Chattanooga round out the competing teams.
