Strong Singles Play Leads Alabama To A 5-2 Win Over No. 22 Vanderbilt

The Crimson Tide won 5-of-6 singles matches in its victory over the Commodores Sunday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– The Alabama women's tennis team battled to win 5-of-6 singles matches in its 5-2 upset win over No. 22 Vanderbilt Sunday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Crimson Tide advanced to 12-2 on the season and 2-0 in Southeastern Conference play, while Vanderbilt dropped to 8-3 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
UA recorded its first win over the Commodores since 2013, snapping a nine-match winning streak by Vanderbilt.
The Match
- Vanderbilt took an early advantage in the match, jumping out to a 1-0 start with wins at Nos. 2 and 1, respectively, in doubles
- Ola Pitak and Kasia Pitak went 6-4 at No. 3 doubles to contest the opening point as the two defeated Marcella Cruz and Amy Stevens 6-4
- Alabama fought back in singles with Loudmilla Bencheikh making it a 1-1 game with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anna Ross at the top of the order
- Vanderbilt again took the lead with a win at court six, but Anna Parkhomenko fought for a 6-1, 6-4 win over Marcella Cruz at No. 4 to again even the score
- UA recorded its first lead in the match, 3-2, with Petra Sedlackova going 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 against Yufei Long, while courts two and five went into a third set
- On court five, Anne Marie Hiser captured the opening set 6-4 before falling 6-4 in set two. She would drop just one game in the final set to clinch the team win for the Tide.
- Ola Pitak added to UA's score, defeating Anessa Lee 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on court two for the final point of the day
