Alabama Travels to South Dakota State for WNIT Quarterfinals Sunday

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The University of Alabama women's basketball team will face South Dakota State for the first time in more than a decade, when the two teams square off in the Women's National Invitation Tournament Quarterfinals Sunday, March 27 at 5 p.m. CT in Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. The contest will be broadcast on Midco Sports, with Tom Nieman and Brad Newitt on the call.
UA is 2-0 on the road – and 1-0 at home – in the 2022 iteration of the WNIT, while SDSU has hosted and won all three of its postseason games this season.
The Crimson Tide boasts a 20-13 record, including 6-10 in the Southeastern Conference and 6-5 in road games. The Tide has won eight of its last 10 games, including six of its last seven games. During that stretch, the Tide boasted a pair of Associated Press Top 25 wins.
In Alabama's last appearance, it defeated Houston for the second time this season, 79-64, last Thursday in Coleman Coliseum. The win helped the Crimson Tide to 20 wins, its first 20-win season since 2017-18, which also happens to be the last time the Tide reached the WNIT Quarterfinals.
Despite Alabama jumping out to a 24-12 lead on 66.7 percent shooting in the first quarter against Houston, it was a back-and-forth affair through the second quarter as the two teams went into halftime tied up at 40-40. Alabama forced a 22-6 run in the third quarter, helping the Crimson Tide maintain momentum until its eventual triumph.
Brittany Davis, who leads the conference in three-point field goals per game (2.7) and three-point field goals made (88), has led Alabama in scoring all season averaging 17.4 points per game. She and Megan Abrams, who is second on the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game, had mirroring 18-point performances to help knock off the Cougars.
Alabama's third leading scorer this season averaging 11.6 points per game, JaMya Mingo-Young tacked on 17 points in the Crimson Tide's third straight win.
Alabama and South Dakota State have met just three times in program history, with the Crimson Tide dropping all three contests in the series. The last time the two programs squared off was in December 2006, when the Jackrabbits ousted the Crimson Tide, 65-54, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Alabama is less than a month removed from a 2-1 record at the 2022 SEC Tournament, one of just three teams to win at least two games at the event, joining the company of SEC Regular Season Champions South Carolina and SEC Tournament Champions Kentucky.
Alabama is currently boasting four straight games of shooting over 45.0 percent, a streak that also includes breaking the school record for single-season, three-point field goals made, which currently stands at 259.
