BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –– Alabama's Filip Planinsek was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The rookie from Hoce, Slovenia, put together a perfect singles and doubles performance over the weekend, going 2-0 in both events.
Planinsek opened competition on Sunday with a win over then-50th ranked and No. 1 singles player for LSU Ronald Hohmann. The UA freshman defeated Hohmann in straight sets, taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Planinsek also captured the deciding point in the Tide's 4-3 win over Drake. After dropping the opening set tiebreaker 7-6 (1) to Jeremy Schifris, Planinsek battled back to go 6-2 in set two before emerging with the win in a third set 7-6 (6) tiebreak.
In doubles, Planinsek and partner German Samofalov defeated LSU's Hohmann and Vlad Lobak 6-4 at the No. 1 spot, while Planinsek and Patrick Kaukovalta went 6-4 against Drake's No. 1 doubles pair of Schifris and Oliver Johansson.
The weekly honor is the second for Planinsek, who also earned the honor on Jan. 26 following his performance against then-No. 18 Ole Miss, Mercer and Samford.
