
Alabama Finishes in Eighth Place at Linger Longer Invitational

Thomas Ponder led the Tide with his second top-10 finish of the season
EATONTON, Ga. – Alabama junior Thomas Ponder tied for ninth overall to lead the Alabama men's golf team in the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational. As a team, the Crimson Tide finished in eighth place in the 15-team field with a 54-hole total of 5-over par 869 (293-288-286).
Ponder earned his second top-10 finish of the season and fifth of his career, finishing with a 5-under par 211 (74-68-69) including going 7-under par over the final 36 holes of tournament action.
Canon Claycomb joined Ponder in the top 25 in a tie for 25th after carding a final round 73 to finish at 1-over par 217 (72-72-73) on the par-72, 7,436-yard Great Waters Golf Course.
The Highlights
- Alabama collected a total of 53 birdies which was fifth-best in the 15-team field
- Ponder recorded a 4-under par 68 in Monday's second round and 3-under 69 Tuesday to finish at 7-under par over the last two rounds
- Ponder now has a team-leading seven rounds in the 60s this season and 16 in his career
- Claycomb earned his fifth consecutive top-25 finish and the 12th of his career.
- Junior Jack Goldasich posted 3-over par 75s in the first and third rounds, which was sandwiched around a 1-under par 71 in round two to earn a career-best finish of 40th overall with a 5-over 221
- Junior Dillon West and sophomore JP Cave posted matching totals of 1-over par 73 in Tuesday's final round
- West ended play tied for 45th at 6-over par 222 (72-77-72), with Cave rounding out the Tide's lineup in 67th at 13-over 229 (76-80-73)
- Competing as individuals, graduate student Charlie Nikitas placed 40th at 5-over par 221 (71-71-79), while Jones Free closed out the tournament tied for 48th place at 7-over par 223 (75-76-72)
The Field
- No. 10 Georgia took home the tournament title with a team total of 28-under par 836, closing out the event with an 8-under par 280 in Tuesday's final round
- No. 6 Vanderbilt finished four strokes back at 24-under par 840, followed by Florida in third at 14-under par 850
- The Gators finished two strokes ahead of No. 22 Clemson in fourth place at 12-under par 852, with Charlotte rounding out the top five at 11-under par 853
- The 15-team tournament field features five of the nation's top 25 teams, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Vanderbilt, No. 10 Georgia, No. 19 Florida and No. 22 Clemson.
- The field also includes co-hosts Kennesaw State and Mercer, along with Augusta, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Toledo, UNCG, USF and Virginia
Next Round
- The Tide will close out the regular season at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, held April 2-3.
- The event will be contested at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
