Alabama Splits Sunday Doubleheader Against LSU, Drake

The Crimson Tide fell 4-2 in a battle against LSU before rallying to take a 4-3 victory over Drake

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– The Alabama men's tennis team split its doubleheader Sunday against LSU and Drake at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The Crimson Tide (5-12, 0-4 SEC) battled Southeastern Conference foe LSU (11-5, 3-3 SEC) in a 4-2 loss, before rallying to take a 4-3 victory over Drake (4-9, 0-0 SL) to close the day.

The Tide vs. The Tigers

Alabama started the match with a 1-0 advantage after winning the doubles point with victories on courts one and three
The No. 28^th ranked doubles team of German Samofalov and Filip Planinsek defeated Ronald Hohman and Vlad Lobak at No. 1 doubles, but LSU answered with a win on court two
Patrick Kaukovalta and Juan Martin fought through a 7-5 victory on court three against Boris Kozlov and Nick Watson to give UA the doubles point
Planinsek quickly followed with a win in singles, taking a 6-3, 6-4 score against No. 50 ranked Ronald Hohmann at No. 1
LSU recorded wins at Nos. 6 and 2, respectively, to even the score at 2-2, before a victory on court three gave the Tigers the lead
Courts four and five would head into a third set with LSU emerging with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 4 for the team win
When the match was clinched Juan Martin was leading 6-2, 3-6, 5-4 against Joao Graca on court five

Alabama Against Drake

Drake captured the first doubles match with a win on court three, but Planinsek and Kaukovalta battled to a 6-4 score against Oliver Johansson and Jeremy Schifris on court one to even the attempt
Enzo Aguiard and Joao Ferreira would head into a tiebreaker on court two, but the Bulldogs would go 7-5 in the tiebreak for the go-ahead point
In singles, Zach Foster evened the score with 6-3, 6-3 effort against Markus Bolin on court six
Samofalov gave the Tide a 2-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Oliver Johansson on court three before Aguiard extended UA's advantage with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Matija Matic on court two
Back-to-back losses on courts four and five would even the score at 3-3 and force the deciding point to be made at the top of the order
After dropping the first set 7-6 (7-1), Planinsek rallied to take set two at 6-2
Planinsek and Drake's Jeremy Schifris would trade games in the third set as the match reached a 6-6 tie. After an even paced opening, Planinsek took an 8-6 victory in the tiebreak to win his match and the final point for Alabama.

The Tide will again hit the road as it travels for a pair of conference matches next weekend
UA plays Mississippi State Friday, March 25, at 3 p.m. CT in Starkville, Miss., before facing Vanderbilt at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, in Nashville, Tenn.
