NEW ORLEANS – Alabama junior Bobby Colantonio Jr. is the 2022 USTFCCCA South Region Field Athlete of the Year, the coaches' association announced Thursday.
The Crimson Tide standout won Alabama's first NCAA weight throw title earlier this month in Birmingham, Ala., adding it to the SEC title he won last month. Colantonio dominated the competition, with four of his six throws at the NCAA Championships going better than the best mark by the second-place finisher.
The Rhode Island, native went undefeated in the weight throw in 2022 after opening the season with a career-best and UA record throw of 24.15 meters, which ranks him eighth all-time collegiately. Of the 20 throws over 23.00 meters in 2022, Colantonio produced 14.
Colantonio is the first member of the UA men's team to earn indoor South Region Field Athlete of the Year honors.
Alabama Throws Coach Derek Yush Said
"We are super proud of Bobby. He continually works hard to perfect his technique and is becoming a great competitor. He is certainly highly deserving of this latest honor and we know the sky is the limit for this young man."
