The Crimson Tide posted five top-10 finishes and set three school records during the second day of competition at the national championships
ATLANTA – The Alabama women's swimming and diving team broke three school records and posted five top-10 finishes, including a silver medal in the final event of the night, on day two of the NCAA Championships being held in Atlanta at the McAuley Aquatic Center this week.
The Crimson Tide finished day two of the four-day championships in fourth place with 120 points, just eight points out of second place.
Four Alabama women scored in individual events and the night closed with the Tide laying down a blistering school-record 1:25.47 to take second in the 200 freestyle relay, nearly a second ahead of the rest of the field.
Kalia Antoniou started the Tide's 200 freestyle relay off with a career-best 21.64 in the leadoff leg, with Morgan Scott, Kailyn Winter and Cora Dupre staying right with eventual champs Virginia. The Tide's quartet moved up four places from last year's NCAA finish in the 200 free relay and shaved nearly a second off the previous school mark.
Scott, Dupre and Antoniou all scored in the 50 freestyle, with Scott taking fourth in finals with a school record 21.43 and Dupre taking fifth with a 21.47, matching her then-school record mark from prelims. Antoniou took second in the B final and 10th overall with a time of 21.73. No member of the UA women's team had broken 21.50 before this weekend. Both Scott and Dupre swam the 50 at last year's NCAA Championships, but didn't make the top-16, while both made the championship final in 2022.
After finishing 10th in the 500 freestyle at last year's NCAAs, Kensey McMahon moved into the championship final this season, taking seventh place with a time of 4:40.06.
Alabama Head Coach Margo Geer Said
"It was a great day for the Crimson Tide, with big individual performances for Kensey, Morgan, Cora and Kalia tonight. We're very proud of the way they competed and found ways to get better tonight. It was great to end the session with our 200 free relay. Those girls came together for our fastest performance in school history and a strong second-place finish! Overall, it was an exciting day with three school records and a lot of energy to get us rolling for tomorrow."
