National Girls & Women in Sports Day
Wednesday, February 2 marks the 36th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day - an occasion dedicated to honoring the achievements of female athletes, coaches and leaders and highlighting the power of sports to unlock the limitless potential of women and girls. The Crimson Tide Foundation invites you to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day by supporting the scholarships that make it possible for our student-athletes to experience personal growth through sports participation, win championships, and earn a degree from The University of Alabama. Double your impact when you give to the Crimson Tide Scholarship Fund (CTSF) – the annual scholarship fund for Alabama Athletics – as the Alabama ONE Aspire Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar the first $25,000 contributed to the CTSF between January 26 and February 2. Black History Month
Throughout the month of February, we will be celebrating student-athlete trailblazers through a social media campaign and will also be launching a Tide Trailblazers section on RollTide.com to recognize those who broke barriers on the way to building the Crimson Tide's tradition of excellence and legacy of champions. Additionally, campus has provided several resources and planned many events and activities scheduled to take place over the next few weeks.
More Honors for Mercy Chelangat and Cross Country
Congratulations to Mercy Chelangat who was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row after finishing runner-up at this fall's NCAA Championships. Mercy, Flomena Asekol, Esther Gitahi, Victor Kiprop and Hillary Cheruiyot were all named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic squad, while both our men and women earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors. In addition to an outstanding fall semester in the classroom and on the course, Mercy got her 2022 indoor season off to a great start, bettering her own school record in the 5,000 meters earlier this month at the Samford Invitational.
Alabama at No. 11 on LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Standings Following Fall Season
One of our goals is to consistently be in the top 10 of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings, and we're in a great place already as we came in at No. 11 in the initial run of rankings following the fall season. This award takes into account the finishes of all sports and places a point value based on that finish at season's end. As you may recall, we came in at seventh in last year's Cup, which is our highest in program history.
Host of Home Events this Weekend
There are several opportunities to cheer on the Tide this weekend in Tuscaloosa, beginning with gymnastics on Friday night as we take the floor against Western Michigan and UNC at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, our men's tennis team hosts a doubleheader with Memphis (1 p.m.) and UAB (6 p.m.) indoors at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility, while men's basketball returns to Coleman for a matchup with Kentucky at 7 p.m.
Baseball and Softball Gear up for Spring Seasons
Spring practice is underway for both our baseball and softball teams as they gear up for the 2022 season. Baseball opens at home Feb. 18-20 against Xavier, while softball, selected as the preseason favorite to win the SEC by the league coaches, will begin its season next weekend in Tucson, Ariz. at the Candrea Classic.
Moresco Invited to 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur
Congratulations to Benedetta Moresco for earning an invitation to compete at the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur, which is set to take place March 30 – April 2. This will be Benedetta's second straight appearance in the event after making the tournament in 2021.
University Spotlight
More congratulations are in order as we salute Dr. Steve D. Mobley Jr., who was selected as one of the nation's top 15 emerging scholars under 40 by "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education." He has been a faculty member in UA's department of education leadership, policy and technology studies since August 2016 and was one of several distinguished HBCU alums recognized earlier this season at our women's basketball HBCU night.
Beer and Wine Potentially on the Horizon at Coleman
Some of you may have heard, but for those who did not, Levy, our concessionaire, is in the process of acquiring a license to sell alcohol at sporting events, beginning with basketball and gymnastics at Coleman Coliseum. Still a few weeks out before we're able to sell, if all goes as planned, so we will be sure to communicate exactly if and when we are a go for sales in the near future. Offerings would include both beer and wine at designated locations throughout the concourse. As for other venues and sports, we will evaluate how this initial phase in Coleman goes and go from there.
