The Crimson Tide earned six medals on the fourth day of the championships including three gold, one silver and two bronze
KNOXVILLE, Ala. – Alabama's medal count continues to soar at the 2022 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, with the Crimson Tide totaling six medals, including three gold, one silver and two bronze, on the meet's fourth day. With one day of competition remaining, the Crimson Tide has already tallied 14 medals, including six gold.
Alabama capped a strong Friday with a pair of podium finishes in the day's final event, the 400 medley relay.
The UA women used a school, SEC and SEC Championship record swim from Rhyan White, Avery Wiseman, Morgan Scott and Cora Dupre to win the women's 400 medley relay, earning the Crimson Tide's third relay gold of the meet with a time of 3:26.64. The relay also combined to break the facility record with their swim.
The men also medaled to close the night, with Matt Menke, Derek Maas, Tyler Sesvold and Jonathan Berneburg going 3:03.58 in the 400 medley relay to take their second relay silver of the meet.
Earlier in the evening, White won her third-consecutive 100 backstroke title after going 50.18 to finish more than a second ahead of the field. With her second individual medal of the meet, White has now tallied six gold medals and two silver with one more individual race, the 200 backstroke, to go.
Maas shattered the school record in the men's 100 breaststroke to win his first SEC title, posting a 50.78 to finish nearly a half second ahead of second place. Maas is the first UA swimmer under 51 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, crushing the previous record, which he set in prelims. He also bettered the facility record, which he originally broke during Friday's prelims.
Menke earned his second-consecutive bronze medal in the men's 100 backstroke, turning in a time of 45.56, just out of second place. He dropped nearly a half second off his time from prelims to earn his spot on the podium.
Wiseman dropped nearly a second off her time from prelims to grab a spot on the podium after posting a 58.73 in finals and finishing third.
The Alabama men are in third place with 711 points, 28 points behind second-place Tennessee, while the Tide women are in fourth with 685 points, 27 points out of third.
Head Coach Margo Geer Said
"Tonight was special! To come away with six podium finishes tonight, including three gold medals, showed how strong we can be, but what I'm proudest of is the spirit and support that this team continues to display every day, in every session. We've got one more day to show what we're about and we're looking forward to finishing strong."
