Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell to be Honored at A-Day
We are honored to recognize Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell in Tuscaloosa on April 16 for all that they mean to not only Alabama Football but also all of Alabama Athletics and the role they both played in opening doors and providing opportunities for generations to come. We encourage you to join us for our celebration of these two incredible men and trailblazers and will share more details about our plans as the weekend gets closer.
The Crimson Standard Phase II Projects
On February 4, we received Stage I approval from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees to move forward with Phase II of The Crimson Standard Initiative, which would include a new competition arena for basketball and gymnastics as well as a practice facility for the golf programs. This next step in the evolution of our facilities will have a significant impact on both our programs and our fans for years to come, and we are so incredibly appreciative of so many, including the Board of Trustees, Chancellor St. John, President Bell and our donors, to help make this happen.
As with any projects of this magnitude, fundraising success will be critical. If you are interested in supporting The Crimson Standard, please visit uactf.org/donate to make a gift or contact the Crimson Tide Foundation to speak with a fundraiser about your options for philanthropically supporting the project.
Patterson, Robbins Recognized as SEC Trailblazers
A well-deserved honor for Sarah Patterson and Marie Robbins as they are being recognized as SEC Trailblazers for contributing to the advancement of women and the growth of women's athletics in conjunction with the league's 50th anniversary of Title IX celebration. Both Sarah and Marie will be formally honored in Nashville at the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament during halftime of our first game as well as with the entire group of honorees from around the league on semifinal Saturday.
Softball Dominates on Opening Weekend
Our softball team had an outstanding opening weekend in Arizona at the Candrea Classic, going undefeated while scoring at least five runs in all four games with 11-0 victories in five innings over No. 9 Arizona and Southern Utah, a 5-1 win against Oregon State and an 8-3 decision to wrap up the tournament over New Mexico. We are looking forward to the home opener this weekend, hosting the Easton Bama Bash where we welcome Evansville, Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee to town.
Coach Mainz Earns Win No. 300 at Alabama
Congratulations to Jenny Mainz for earning her 300th win as our head women's tennis coach, which occurred on Sunday with a 4-0 sweep against TCU. I'm glad we were able to surprise Jenny on the court and celebrate the milestone at home with a great group of fans. Speaking of fans, our team will be back at it at home on Friday and Sunday against Memphis and Minnesota, respectively, so more opportunities to cheer on the Tide!
Baseball Opens Season with Weekend Series Against Xavier
Another sport season will be underway Friday as baseball takes the field for the first time in 2022, welcoming Xavier for a weekend series in Tuscaloosa. First pitch for Friday's opener is slated for 3 p.m.
Basketball Regular Season Winding Down
Just a few weeks remaining of the regular season for both our men's and women's basketball teams, which means a handful of opportunities left to catch the two in Coleman. Our men's team hosts Mississippi State on Wednesday night before its next road swing and closes out the home schedule with back-to-back games against South Carolina on Feb. 26 and Texas A&M on March 2. Women's basketball has two remaining home games with Tennessee on Thursday and Vanderbilt in the regular-season finale on Feb. 27.
Golfs Head to Florida to Begin Spring Seasons
Our men's and women's golf teams are nearing the start of their seasons, which will both begin in the Sunshine State on Sunday. Our men are slated to take part in the Watersound Invitational in Panama City, while the women head to Melbourne for the Moon Golf Invitational. Best of luck to both squads!
Championship Season for Swimming & Diving
After a tremendous regular season that saw six school records fall, our swimming and diving teams are in Knoxville, Tenn., this week for the start of the postseason with the Southeastern Conference Championships. We're excited to cheer on coach Margo Geer's squads as they begin competition Tuesday and carry on through Saturday night. All sessions will be streamed live on SEC Network+ and you can follow along via RollTide.com.
Strong Regular Season Continues for Track and Field
Our track and field teams continued the indoor regular season this past weekend with three new school records to bring the season total to seven. Mercy Chelangat bettered her own school mark in the 5,000 meters by 10 seconds, while Eliud Kipsang lowered his school standard in the mile and Hillary Cheruiyot continued a stellar rookie campaign by breaking Crimson Tide legend David Kimani's 2001 3,000-meter mark. One more weekend of the regular season, and then we are headed to the 2022 Indoor SEC Championships Feb. 25-26 in College Station, Texas.
SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll
Congratulations are in order for the 81 Crimson Tide student-athletes who earned a place on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll. We are very proud of the job that our young men and women do in the classroom and are always happy to see that effort recognized.
University Spotlight
As someone who walks around campus quite a bit, it comes as no surprise that UA has been recognized for a seventh consecutive year as "Tree Campus USA." This award, given to fewer than 400 colleges and universities by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors those that promote healthy trees and conservation efforts. Our ground are incredible and help to make UA the special place that it is. A round of applause to all of those that service our campus to make this possible.
