Happy Holidays from Alabama Athletics!
On behalf of the Alabama Department of Athletics, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and the happiest of holidays. May your celebrations be merry and your season bright!
Congratulations Grads!
We had 25 student-athletes receive diplomas during UA's 2022 Winter Commencement, including 13 from football, four from soccer, two from women's basketball, rowing and women's track and field, and one each from baseball and men's golf. Our young men and women not only perform at an extremely high level in their respective sports, but they also achieve success in the classroom. We are so proud of this most recent group of Bama Grads!
Basketball Continues Homestand
It has been a busy month for our basketball programs, and our homestand for both the men and women continues this week with a Tuesday doubleheader as the women host Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. and the men Jackson State at 6 p.m. We will be collecting stuffed animals at the women's game and new toys at the men's game, which will be donated to local charities for the holidays. Our women then close out the nonconference slate on Thursday, welcoming in North Florida for a 12 p.m. tip. Tickets are still on sale for all three games this week and can be purchased ahead of time online or by calling the Alabama Ticket Office at 205-348-2262.
National Awards Rolling In
We've had several of our student-athletes recognized nationally over the last few weeks as the fall sports come to a close. Football's Will Anderson Jr. repeated as the Nagurski Trophy winner and added the Rotary Lombardi Award, Bednarik Award and the Lott IMPACT Trophy. Will, along with Bryce Young, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jordan Battle, Will Reichard and Byron Young each earned All-America honors from one or more of the various outlets.
Soccer's Felicia Knox, Riley Mattingly Parker, Gessica Skorka, Reyna Reyes and Kat Rogers all earned Academic-All America honors with Felicia also being named the Academic All-America Team Member of the Year for the sport. In addition, Reyna has been named a Honda Award finalist, and she, Felicia, Riley and Gianna Paul claimed a spot on TopDrawSoccer's Best XI Team.
Swimmers Close World Championships in Melbourne
Action at the 2022 FINA World Short Course Championships wrapped up yesterday for the Crimson Tide contingent, which was led by distance swimmer Kensey McMahon, who earned her first career international medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle, taking bronze. In all, three current swimmers and two alums combined for four top-15 finishes.
Gymnastics Hosts Crimson White Preview
Our seventh-ranked gymnastics team was unveiled Friday night at its Crimson White Preview, giving fans an opportunity to see the team in action before the season officially begins next month. It was a great crowd on hand to get the first look at the 2023 squad along with new head coach Ashley Johnston. We've got a strong home schedule, beginning with Michigan State on Jan. 6, so pick up your season and single-meet tickets soon!
Polly Mack Earns LPGA Tour Card
Congratulations to former golfer Polly Mack on earning her LPGA Tour Card earlier this month! Polly, a 2022 graduate, finished 15th overall at the two-week LPGA Q-Series event in Dothan to earn full status on the Tour for 2023-24.
