- Student-Athlete of the Year: Riley Mattingly Parker
- Forward of the Year: Riley Mattingly Parker
- Midfielder of the Year: Felicia Knox
- Defender of the Year: Reyna Reyes
- Freshman of the Year: Gianna Paul
In addition to the aforementioned awards, we also had eight student-athletes earn a spot on one of the various All-SEC teams.
Basketball Season Gets Underway with Doubleheader
What a great start to basketball last night as we tipped off the season with a doubleheader in Coleman Coliseum. Our women's team got the night started with a dominant 98-51 win over Alabama A&M thanks to 53.4 percent shooting from the floor. The men then posted a 75-54 victory over Longwood with four players in double figure scoring and four with 10 or more rebounds.
Our women hit the road tomorrow for a Thursday matchup at Tulane, while the men are back in action at home Friday against Liberty at 7 p.m.
Cross Country Sweeps SEC Titles, Dominates All-SEC Honors
Congrats to Dan Waters and our men's and women's cross country teams for sweeping the Southeastern Conference titles in Oxford, Miss., on October 29. It was our first women's title since 1987 and the first men's title since 2009. With the sweep, Alabama also became the first school outside of Arkansas to win both the men's and women's titles in the same year since 1990. Our women were dominant, putting four finishers in the top seven and winning by 38 points, while the men, led by SEC individual champion Victor Kiprop, gutted out one of the closest victories in SEC history, with the top-four teams scoring within five points of one another.
With the titles, our men and women claimed half of the spots on the First Team All-SEC list, including Mercy Chelangat, Hilda Olemomoi, Amaris Tyynismaa and Flomena Asekol for the women and Victor, Hillary Cheruiyot and Eliud Kipsang for the men. Hilda and Will Pinson also earned SEC All-Freshman honors.
The postseason continues for both squads this Friday with the NCAA South Regional Championships, which will be held in Huntsville, Ala.
Thank-A-Thon
Our student-athletes, coaches and staff are all deeply aware of the impact our donors have on Alabama Athletics. During the week of October 24, over 200 student-athletes participated in our eighth annual Thank-A-Thon, taking time to call more than 1,500 Crimson Tide Foundation donors and share their heartfelt gratitude. Our donors play a critical role in ensuring a world-class experience for the 600+ student-athletes we serve, and we are incredibly thankful for their support.
University Spotlight
Congratulations to recent UA graduate Micah Presley for earning a John S. McCain Strategic Defense Fellowship through the U.S. Department of Defense. He is the first UA student or graduate to receive the fellowship, which is designed to provide leadership development for the commencement of a career track towards senior leadership in the Department of Defense.
