
Alabama’s Filip Planinsek Named SEC Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week

Planinsek led the Crimson Tide in its first three dual matches, posting a 3-0 start in both singles and doubles
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –– Alabama's Filip Planinsek opened the spring season strong, going undefeated in doubles and singles action to earn this season's first Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week honor, the league announced Wednesday.
Planinsek holds a 3-0 record in both doubles and singles, including an upset win against No. 18 Ole Miss' Finn Reynolds, who is ranked as the No. 44 singles player according to the ITA. Planinsek, ranked 83rd in singles, battled to take a come-from-behind victory, defeating Reynolds 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Additionally, Planinsek secured a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Mercer's Lucas Wayenburg and a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Samford's Jim Hendrix.
The No. 16 pairing of Planinsek and Juan Martin swept the team's home opening double header against Mercer and Samford, going 6-1 against Wayenburg and David Georgadze and 7-5 against Eladio Fabregas and Will Gray, respectively. Against the Rebels, Planinsek and partner German Samofalov, posted a 6-4 win over Reynolds and Lukas Engelhardt to help UA win the doubles point.
Planinsek played at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles as the Tide started the season 2-1 in non-conference play. Alabama's match against Ole Miss on Jan. 22 was a non-conference contest. The two teams will compete in SEC play on March 11.

Alabama travels to Starkville, Miss., to compete in the ITA Kickoff. The Tide opens the tournament on Saturday, Jan. 29 against Kentucky at 10 a.m. CT.
