TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The second week of the 2021-22 National Football League season wrapped up on Monday. Below is a look at some of the highlights from week two by former Crimson Tide players currently in the NFL.
The Tennessee offense received a pair of standout performances Sunday afternoon from Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry and his new teammate, Julio Jones. Henry rushed 35 times for 182 yards and three touchdowns while adding six catches for 55 yards. Jones recorded six receptions of his own for 128 yards. The Titans used the combined efforts of Henry and Jones to seal an overtime road victory at Seattle.
Joining Jones with impressive performances at wide receiver were Henry Ruggs III and Calvin Ridley. Ruggs III tallied five receptions for 113 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown late in the fourth. His score helped the Las Vegas Raiders to a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ridley hauled in a team-high seven catches for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Atlanta Falcons.
Damien Harris rounded out the former Tide standouts on the offensive side of the ball. The Pats' running back provided a spark for the New England offense, tallying 62 yards rushing on 16 carries, including a 26-yard touchdown run to cap off his day. Harris and the Patriots cruised to a 25-6 win over the Jets.
On the defensive ball, Jonathan Allen made his presence known for the second consecutive week. The defensive tackle posted six stops, including three tackles for loss and two sacks to go with three quarterback hurries. Thanks to Allen's efforts, the Washington Football Team secured a win over the New York Giants.
Denver was helped to a win on Sunday thanks to a pair of former UA defensive backs who each forced a turnover. Veteran Kareem Jackson tallied six tackles, broke up one pass and added an interception to his stat sheet. Rookie Patrick Surtain II recorded the first interception of his young NFL career while also adding four tackles and a pass break up as the Broncos took down the Jacksonville Jaguars, 23-13.
Two more defensive backs helped their respective teams to a win in week two. Cowboys' cornerback Trevon Diggs posted six tackles and picked off his second pass of the season in Dallas' 20-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Also intercepting a pass was Bills' corner Levi Wallace, who added two tackles and a pair of pass breakups as Buffalo cruised to a 35-0 shutout of the Miami Dolphins.
