
Alabama Duo Earns SEC Cross Country Weekly Honors

Victor Kiprop was named the SEC Runner of the Week, while fellow freshman Hillary Cheruiyot earned SEC Freshman of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama duo of Victor Kiprop and Hillary Cheruiyot opened their Crimson Tide cross country careers in style, earning Southeastern Conference weekly honors following a strong showing at last Friday's North Alabama Showcase, the league office announced Tuesday.
Kiprop and Cheruiyot, along with Eliud Kipsang, swept the top-three spots in the individual race to lead the Tide to a dominating team win.
Victor Kiprop – SEC Runner of the Week
- In his UA debut, Kiprop won the North Alabama Showcase with a time of 23:20.85 over the 8-kilometer course
- Kiprop led a 1-2-3 Alabama sweep in the individual race and spearheaded Alabama's team win with a low score 25 points
- Kiprop finished more than 20 seconds ahead of the field for the dominating win over a race that included 169 runners and 20 teams
Hillary Cheruiyot – SEC Freshman of the Week
- In his first race for the Crimson Tide, Cheruiyot finished third at the North Alabama Showcase with a time of 23:44.97, trailing only his teammates Victor Kiprop and Eliud Kipsang
- The rookie was third out of 169 individual
- Cheruiyot finished more than two seconds better than anyone not wearing an Alabama uniform
Alabama's men and women return to action on Oct. 1 at the Joe Piane Invitational, in South Bend, Ind.
