The Crimson Tide women’s golf team is tied for eighth through 18 holes
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – The University of Alabama women's golf team completed its first 18 holes of the season Monday, tying Texas for eighth place on a 3-over-par 291 through the first round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn. The team total ties for the Crimson Tide's second-best start in its last 11 tournaments.
Competing in one of the most stacked fields in women's golf, the Crimson Tide is just four shots off the top five (1-under-par 287), six shots off second-place Duke (3-under-par 285) and 13 shots off first-place South Carolina (10-under-par 278).
Benedetta Moresco, the reigning 2021 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, is pacing the lineup after posting a 4-under-par 68 to tie for third place behind some talented company. The sophomore began the morning charting four birdies for a spotless 4-under-par 32 on the back nine, before shooting an even par (three bogeys, three birdies) on the front nine to close out her opening round.
She is just one shot back of Ole Miss' Julia Johnson in second place (5-under-par 67) and two shots back of South Carolina's Hannah Darling in first place (6-under-par 66). Moresco's mark of 68 is tied for the second-best, single-round score in her young career at the Capstone, and it is just shy of her single-round career record of 67.
Emilie Øverås forced a steady hand in the first round, too, reporting an even-par 72. The junior posted a bogey on the par-4 No. 14 but recovered with a birdie on the par-5 No. 17. She rallied a spotless scorecard on the front nine to sit at a tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard.
Veteran Polly Mack recorded four bogeys and a birdie through her first nine holes but picked up speed after stamping two bogeys and three birdies in her second nine holes. Mack posted a 2-over-par 74, sharing 32nd place on the individual leaderboard.
Angelica Moresco, Alabama's only player competing at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate for the second time in her career, is tied for 47th after punching a 5-over-par 77 in the first round.
Making her Crimson Tide debut, Sarah Edwards is tied for 55th after recording a 7-over-par 79.
The Crimson Tide will tee off in the second round Tuesday at 8:55 a.m. CT on No. 10, paired with Ole Miss and Texas.
FROM HEAD COACH MIC POTTER
"I thought we had a big improvement today compared to where we were at any point last season, so I was happy to see that. We had a little bit of trouble controlling our speed on the greens; we haven't had this much pace anywhere in our preparations this fall. So, we had some good, sizeable comeback putts in our first round, but we need to take the stress off our game by putting the first putts close to the hole. We also need to work on our pitching, and we need to take more advantage of the par 5s, but we kept it around par and have a chance to follow it up with two good days."
