
Alabama Swimming’s Rhyan White Takes Fourth in the 100-meter Backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics

The Crimson Tide junior matched her career-best time to finish fourth behind a trio of past and present world record holders
TOKYO - Getting faster with each swim, Alabama's Rhyan White matched the fastest time of her career to take fourth in the 100-meter backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics Monday night, less than four-tenths of a second out of third place.
White finished behind a trio of past and present world record holders, including Team USA teammate Regan Smith, who took bronze.
The Herriman, Utah, native opened her first Olympic Games with a 59.02 in the preliminaries and was seeded sixth heading into the semifinals, where she dropped down to a 58.46 to take second in the first semifinal, making the Olympic final with the fourth fastest time of the semis.
White returns to action on July 29 at 6 a.m. in the prelims of the 200-meter backstroke, the event she won at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The Tide in Tokyo - Swimming
- In addition to White, two other Alabama swimmers have competed over the first three days of swimming in Toyko
- Diana Pekova (Bulgaria) was 25th in the 200 individual medley with a 2:16.70 and 34th in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:10.61
- Leonie Kullmann (Germany) took 18th overall in the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 4:10.25
- Anton McKee (Iceland), in his third Olympiad, is up next for the Tide, swimming the prelims of the 200-meter breaststroke at 5:45 a.m. CT on Tuesday
