29 Alabama Rowers Earn 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Honors

The academic honors put an exclamation mark on a historic season for the program
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing First and Second Teams were announced by the league office Thursday afternoon, as 29 members of the University of Alabama rowing team headlined the exclusive list. Of the 29 Crimson Tide student-athletes, four were nominated with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
To make the first team, members had to maintain a 3.20 GPA or better, while second team selections had to earn a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes had to meet one of those standards either cumulative or over the previous two semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence, while seniors who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
The academic honors come the same week head coach Glenn Putyrae was named the 2021 Regional Coach of the Year, while his staff earned 2021 Regional Staff of the Year honors, thanks to the voters of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. The Crimson Tide program concluded its historic season Sunday, May 30, after finishing in 13th place at the 2021 NCAA Rowing Championship in Sarasota, Fla., their first-ever national championship appearance. The team finished with 55 points, besting a four-way tie to ease into the top 15 in its inaugural appearance.
