Edson Ortiz advanced to the main single draw while Patrick Kaukovalta and Riccardo Roberto made the tourney in doubles
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A day after being selected to the team portion of the NCAA Championships, the Alabama men's tennis team had a trio of players qualify for the singles and doubles portion of the tourney.
Edson Ortiz earned a place in the 64-player singles draw, while Patrick Kaukovalta and Riccardo Roberto made the 32-team doubles draw. In addition, Zhe Zhou is an alternate in singles.
While Ortiz is making his first appearance in the singles draw, he did advance to NCAAs in double in 2018. This is Kaukovalta's second trip to NCAAs after advancing to the NCAA doubles final and finishing as runner-up along with his partner Mazen Osama in 2019. Roberto is making his first NCAA tourney as an individual. If Zhou advances, it will also be his first time at NCAAs as an individual.
The singles and doubles competition runs May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., after the conclusion of the team championship. The Crimson Tide opens team play on Saturday, May 8 at 11 a.m. in Waco, Texas against Oregon.
This season marks the sixth time since 2013 that Alabama has had players advance to the NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles.
