The Crimson Tide collected 55 points in its inaugural national championship appearance
SARASOTA, Fla. – In its first appearance at the national regatta, Alabama rowing finished 13th at the 2021 NCAA Rowing Championship in Sarasota, Florida. The Crimson Tide collected 55 points throughout the three-day competition, tying Wisconsin and Washington State in scoring but finishing higher than those teams in the standings thanks to the Tide's I Eights performance.
All three boats competed in finals Sunday morning, with the I Eights competing in the petite final and the II Eights and the Fours in their respective C finals.
The 1V8+ crew paced the Crimson Tide throughout the regatta, reaching the petite final after winning their repêchage Friday afternoon and earning a lane in the A-B semifinals Saturday morning. In their final race of the season this morning, the group finished in fifth place in their heat and 11th place overall in 6:38.759. The boat also tied its pre-championship seeding of No. 11.
The 2V8+ crew rallied for fifth place in the C final and 17th place overall, crossing the finish line in 6:51.030, also tying their pre-championship seeding of No. 17. Before that, the Fours raced for fourth place in the C final and 16th place overall, as the fivesome rowed past the final buoys in 7:32.765.
FROM HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE
"We're super proud of this team and what they were able to accomplish this year, and we're also really grateful to all of the time and effort that our graduate students and seniors gave us to help the program get to this point. We know that getting here is something that a lot of teams before us have worked for, and to be the first team to be on this stage is super exciting for us. Also, to be competitive and show that we're not just here but that we belonged here is really important for us as a program. I told the team there are two things we have to do now – be really thoughtful about what we have learned but also, more importantly, to have decisive action so we can take what we learned and make changes for the future."
