
Three Alabama Men’s Golfers Earn All-SEC Honors

Wilson Furr named to first team, Thomas Ponder tabbed to second team and Canon Claycomb garners all-freshman accolades for the 2020-21 season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –Alabama's Wilson Furr has been named First Team All-Southeastern Conference to highlight a trio of postseason awards for the Crimson Tide men's golf team, the league office announced on Friday. In addition to Furr's recognition, Thomas Ponder was tabbed All-SEC second team, while Canon Claycomb earned a spot on the league's all-freshman team.
It marks the first conference honors for both Furr and Ponder, who have led the Crimson Tide throughout the season. Furthermore, Claycomb becomes the first UA men's golfer to earn a spot on the league's all-freshman team since former standout Davis Riley achieved the feat back in 2016.
Wilson Furr, First Team All-SEC
- Ranked No. 48 in the nation, according to the updated Golfweek individual rankings heading into NCAA Regional play
- Leads Alabama in average vs. par (-0.19) while ranking second in stroke average at 71.15
- Also tops UA in top-five finishes (2), top-20 results (7) and total number of rounds in the 60s (9) on the season
- Carded the lowest 18-hole (64) and 36-hole (134) scores by any Tide golfer this year
- After claiming the 2020 U.S. Amateur stroke play championship last summer, Furr is one of only two players to have played in all nine events on the year
Thomas Ponder, Second Team All-SEC
- Enters NCAA Regional play ranked No. 57 in the nation, according to the updated Golfweek individual rankings
- Leads UA in stroke play at 71.03 and ranks second in average vs. par (-0.07)
- Has collected six top-20 finishes across the nine tournaments this year, while also sharing the team lead for number of par or lower rounds (17) and the best 54-hole score (204)
- One of only two players to have played in all nine events on the year
Canon Claycomb, All-Freshman
- Has also been a steady force for this year's team
- Averaging 72.00 strokes per round, which ranks third on the team, and +1.00 average vs. par, which is fourth-best
- Ranks third on UA with 11 rounds of par or better including three rounds in the 60s
- Earned three top-20 finishes across the eight tournaments he has played this season
The trio will be in action when Alabama competes at the 2021 NCAA Stillwater Regional, which will take place May 17-19 in Stillwater, Okla.
