
Alabama Opens 2021 SEC Men’s Golf Championships Wednesday Morning

The Crimson Tide has won the league championship in four of the last 13 years the event has been held
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Alabama men's golf team is set to compete at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships, which will take place April 21-25 in St. Simons Island, Ga. This event returns this year after the global pandemic forced the cancellation of last year's event and marks the 20th year the tournament has been held on the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.
Alabama has taken home the SEC Championship title a total of five times (1979, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014), four of which have come over in the last 13 years the event has been held. In the most recent SEC Championships that were held in 2019, the Tide fell in the championship match to mark the sixth time in school history UA has finished runners-up at the event.
Alabama will tee off Wednesday's opening round at 7:20 a.m. CT (8:20 a.m. ET) and will be paired with Arkansas and LSU.
About the SEC Championships
- The event will tee off with 18 holes of stroke play Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
- After the 54 holes of stroke play conclude, the top eight teams will advance to match play
- The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will take place on Saturday, while the championship match will be held Sunday
- The semifinal matches will be streamed online on SEC Network+ and the championship match will be televised live on SEC Network

The Lineup
- Wilson Furr and Thomas Ponder will be competing in the top two slots for the Crimson Tide
- Ponder leads the team with a 71.00 stroke average with Furr just behind at 71.04, however, Furr's average vs. par (-0.46) is slightly ahead of Ponder's (-0.25)
- Canon Claycomb has also been a steady force for this year's team, averaging 72.10 strokes per round and +0.95 average vs. par – both of which rank third on the team
- JP Cave will be playing in his first SEC Champions after starting in six of the Tide's eight tournaments this season while maintaining a 75.00 per round average
- Rounding out the Tide starting five is Davis Shore, who will be competing in his first tournament since having to withdraw from the LSU Invitational (Feb. 26) with an injury
- Shore maintains a 72.00 stroke average in the five tournaments in which he competed this season
The Field
- This year's championship will be another competitive field as all 14 teams in the league are ranked among the nation's top-65 according to Golfstat.com's most recent rankings
- Eight of the teams rank inside the top-25 and five rank among the top 50
- Top-25 teams include No. 10 Georgia, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 14 Auburn, No. 15 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Florida, No. 19 Tennessee, No. 22 Arkansas and No. 23 LSU
- The five teams that rank between No. 26-50 include No. 37 Alabama, No. 40 Ole Miss, No. 44 Mississippi State, No. 48 South Carolina and No. 49 Missouri
- Kentucky (No. 68) rounds out the 14-team field
