SEC Champions!
We celebrated another Southeastern Conference championship last week as our men's basketball team claimed its first regular-season league title since 2002. With the win on Saturday at Georgia, we finished the regular season with 21 overall wins, the most since 2012, and reached 16 SEC victories matching the most conference wins in program history. What an incredible season it has been thus far for our student-athletes, coaches and staff, and we wish them all the best as they head to Nashville as the top seed in the 2021 SEC Tournament.
NCAA Selection Shows
Certainly don't want to look past what's up next, however for planning purposes wanted to be sure all of our fans were up to speed on the NCAA Selection Shows for men's and women's basketball. Both of our teams are in position to dance, and we couldn't be more excited about that! The men's show will air Sunday, March 14 at 5 p.m. CT on CBS, while the women's show is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Monday, March 15 on ESPN.
Women's Cross Country Headed to NCAA Championships
Congratulations to the women's cross country squad for earning our first team berth to the NCAA Championships since 1994. The announcement came on Sunday with Alabama coming up as the first name to pop up on the screen on the selection show. While the national meet is usually held in the fall, the NCAA moved it to March 15 due to COVID-19 concerns. We are led by Mercy Chelangat, who put up a dominant performance to win the individual SEC title in October to lead us to a second-place team finish. We're so proud of our team and can't wait to see them race next week in Stillwater, Okla.
24 Crimson Tide Student-Athletes Headed to NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships
In addition to the women's cross country team, our track and field team saw 24 student-athletes earn invitations to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. That total includes 15 men, led by Christian Edwards who is seeded third in the triple jump, and nine women, led by Tamara Clark, who is one of just seven women to earn a spot in both the 60-meters and 200-meters. The championships will be held March 11-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Swimming and Diving Heading to the NCAA Championships
The postseason is certainly in full swing for our winter sports. Our women's swimming and diving team recently had 11 swimmers selected for the upcoming NCAA Championships, led by Rhyan White who is the No. 1 seed in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. Our divers are currently at the NCAA Zone B Championships looking to earn berths of their own, while the Tide men's swimming contingent will be announced on Wednesday. Both NCAA Championship meets will be held in Greensboro, N.C., with the women competing March 17-20 and the men March 24-27.
Gymnastics Postseason Coming to Alabama
While the regular season came to a close last Friday, the gymnastics postseason will get its start in the state of Alabama. As it was announced last month, the Southeastern Conference Championships, originally set to be held in New Orleans, have moved to Huntsville, Ala., and will be held in the Von Braun Center March 20. Alabama will compete in the evening session, which gets underway at 7 p.m. In addition to SECs, it was recently announced that we will host the 2021 NCAA Regional Championships April 1-3. Details on tickets and attendance will be available on RollTide.com soon.
Rowing Season Opener
It's been a long wait, but our rowing team was finally able to race last weekend, sweeping Eastern Michigan here in Tuscaloosa on the Black Warrior River. There was a great crowd out at Manderson Landing cheering on the Tide and enjoying the incredible weather we've had here in town. We are proud of our team for its performance and also for earning its highest ranking in program history, checking in at No. 16 in the polls. Look forward to big things this season from this group!
A-Day Set for April 17
Mark your calendars because football is (almost) back! We recently announced our annual A-Day spring game date, which will take place on Saturday, April 17. Details on the game and events surrounding the instrasquad scrimmage will be forthcoming.
Football Season Ticket Renewals
Football TIDE PRIDE and season ticket renewals launched last week, and I want take a moment to remind you that you can earn Tide Totals priority points while supporting the education of our student-athletes. The Crimson Tide Scholarship Fund (CTSF) is the annual scholarship fund for Alabama Athletics. Donations to the CTSF enable deserving student-athletes to compete for the Crimson Tide while earning a degree from The University of Alabama, and donors to the CTSF earn three Tide Totals priority points for every $100 donated.
University Spotlight
Congratulations to The University of Alabama for, once again, being named a Top Producing Institution for Fulbright U.S. Student Awards. The Capstone set a UA record with 17 students receiving the prestigious honor this academic year. This was also the fifth time in the last six years the University was recognized as a Top Producing Institution.
