Alabama Track and Field Breaks into Two Travel Squads for the Third Week of Competition

The men’s and women’s teams will send athletes to both the Raleigh Relays and the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays to compete this weekend
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's and women's track &and field teams split to compete this week at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., and the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Miss.
Raleigh Relays
- The Tide will send distance runners Vincent Kiprop, Mercy Chelangat and Leah Hanle to compete at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility in Raleigh, N.C., for the Raleigh Relays
- The first day of competition is Thursday, and Mercy Chelangat will run the women's 10k at 9 p.m. CT
- This will be Chelangat's first race after winning the NCAA Cross Country individual title on March 15
- Senior Leah Hanle will compete first for the Alabama squad on Friday with the women's 1,500-meter event beginning at 4:45 p.m. CT
- Vincent Kiprop will continue his outdoor season by competing in the men's 10k at 9 p.m. CT on Friday
- To conclude the Tide's showing at the Raleigh Relays, Leah Hanle will head back to the track on Saturday to compete in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase event at 3:35 p.m. CT
Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays
- The bigger of the two Crimson Tide squads this weekend, including the sprinters, throwers and relay teams, will head a state over to the Mike Sanders Track Complex for the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Miss.
- Competition will kick off on Friday with the women's and men's hammer throw events starting at 10 a.m. CT and 12 p.m. CT respectively
- The first day of competition will conclude with the men's 5k which starts at 7:30 p.m.
- The second and final day of competition begins with the men's and women's shot put events at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday
- The Bulldog Relays will end after the men's 4x400-meter relay , slated to get underway Saturday at 4:25 p.m. CT
Last Time Out
- Alabama stayed in state to compete at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., last weekend
- The Tiger Track Classic was the Tide's second outdoor meet of the season
- The men and women came out of the meet with 26 total top-10 finishes including seven medalists and three event winners
- On the first day of competition, Kieran McKeag won gold in the men's hammer throw with a huge throw of 67.38m
- The second day of the meet proved to be fruitful for the Crimson Tide with Robert Dunning (400-meter hurdles, 51.67) and the women's 4x400-meter relay (3:35.72) earning gold medals with their performances
- Alabama silver medalists included the men's 4x400-meter relay team (3:12.88), Daija Lampkin (200-meter dash, 23.761), Natassha McDonald (400-meter dash, 53.26) and Nickolette Dunbar (shot put, 16.16m)
