The Crimson Tide will host Oklahoma, Arkansas, Auburn, Missouri, Iowa, Iowa State, Eastern Michigan and Maryland April 1-3
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – There wasn't a lot of suspense for the SEC Champion Alabama gymnastics team as it watched the NCAA Selection Show in the Frances Smith Practice Facility on Monday. The Crimson Tide has known since midseason that it was hosting the regional April 1-3 in Coleman Coliseum and having been ranked in the top-eight all season, it knew it would be a top-two seed at its regional.
Now it knows who is coming to town for a visit.
Eastern Michigan and Maryland will compete on Thursday, April 1 starting at 3 p.m., for the opportunity to be in the second of two four-team sessions on Friday, April 2.
The first session on Friday, which gets underway way at 1 p.m., will feature Alabama, which will start on the balance beam, along with Arkansas, Iowa and Iowa State.
The second session on Friday, staring at 7 p.m., will feature Oklahoma, Auburn, Missouri and the winner of Thursday's Eastern Michigan and Maryland match up.
The top-two teams from each of Friday's sessions will compete in the regional final on Saturday, April 3 at 7 p.m. with the top-two teams advancing to the national championships.
Head Coach Dana Duckworth Said
"I'm really proud of the fact that we are a group of women on fire that will just continue to strive for something, because we don't want to feel like we've ever arrived. We want to keep trying to get better, and that's what it's all about. There is going to be some excellent gymnastics in Coleman Coliseum, let me tell you. The teams that are coming here are all good, and there has been a lot of parity in our sport. So, we are going to have to do our job on day two to qualify to the regional finals, and we're going to have to really do our job in finals to be able to qualify for the NCAA championships."
Alabama and the NCAA Championships Regional Round
- Alabama has competed in the regional round of the NCAA Championships every year since its inception in 1982, outside of last season's hiatus
- The Crimson Tide also holds the NCAA record when it comes to regional team titles with 32
- This year marks the 16th time that Alabama has hosted an NCAA gymnastics regional, and the first time since the format changed from one day with one session, to three days and four sessions in 2019
- With the cancellation of the 2020 postseason due to COVID-19, this will be just the second time the three-day, four-session format has been used and just the second time that only eight teams, instead of the traditional 12, will advance to the final site, which will be held in Ft. Worth, Texas, April 16-17
