TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In a match that went down to a third-set tiebreaker on the final court, Alabama women's tennis team fell in a heartbreaker, 4-3, against Furman at the Roberta Alison Tennis Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide moves to 6-1 on the season, while the Paladins are now 2-4.
Behind 2-0 after losing the doubles point and at No. 1 singles, started to climb back into the match with straight-set wins by Sydney Riley at No. 6 and Alba Cortina Pou at No. 4. Furman notched a win at No. 3 between the Tide's two wins for a 3-2 lead.
At that point, the matches on courts 2 and 5 split sets. Anna Parkhomenko won her third set 6-1 at No. 5 to tie up the match 3-3. Moka Ito battled throughout the final set on the last court, pushing the score to 6-6, before falling in the tiebreaker 7-3.
Head Coach Jenny Mainz Said
"I liked our fighting spirit today and felt like we competed hard. Furman is a good team and did a better job finishing at the end. We fell behind after dropping the doubles point and had to play from behind most of the match. We dug deep and fought hard but came up just short. We need these matches to push us so can continue to get better."
