Alabama Men’s Swimming and Diving Earns Two More Medals at the SEC Championships

Matt Menke took bronze in the 100 backstroke before combining with Derek Maas, Colton Stogner and Matt King to earn another relay medal to close the night, taking third in the 400 medley relay
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Alabama men closed the third night of swimming at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships strong, grabbing a pair of medals in the last two events.
Matt Menke used a hard charging finish to snag the bronze medal in the 100 backstroke with a 45.46, making him the fourth fastest swimmer in UA history in that event. He then came back in the next event, combining with Derek Maas, Colton Stogner and Matt King to take third in the 400 medley relay after stopping the clock at 3:04.72.
It was Alabama's third relay and second individual medal of the meet.

"Today was a better day for us and we continued to fight to move ahead in each race. We're very proud of Matt Menke for posting back-to-back best times in the 100 backstroke and then joining with Derek, Colton and Matt King to make it back to the podium in the 400 medley relay. We have one more day, and we need to make the most every opportunity to get better."

- After posting a career-best 45.46 in the championship final of the 100 backstroke, Matt Menke led off the 400 medley relay with another career-best swim, going 45.18
- Jake Marcum won the B final of the 100 backstroke in a time of 46.91, while Christopher O'Connor (47.58) and Eric Stelmar (47.63) took 11th and 12th, respectively, and Alex Robinson (47.85) finished 20th
- Nicholas Perera took eighth place in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:46.40
- The Tide scored three swimmers in the 100 butterfly with Colton Stogner (46.55) taking seventh, Matt King (47.21) finishing 12th and Jonathan Berneburg (47.70) taking 22nd
- Derek Maas won the B final of the 100 breaststroke and took ninth with a 52.61 while Liam Bell won the C final to finish 17th overall with a 53.21
- Trey Sheils finished 19th in the 100 breaststroke after going 53.27
- Kacper Piotrowski finished 20th in the 200 freestyle with a 1:36.47
