Crimson Tide scores second-most points in program history in the 33-point win
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 11/11 Alabama men’s basketball team set a program record for points in an SEC game and scored the second-most points in a game in school history in its 115-82 victory over Georgia on Saturday afternoon inside Coleman Coliseum. The Crimson Tide shot season highs of 64.3 percent from the field (36-of-56), 60.0 percent from three-point range (18-of-30) and 83.3 percent (25-of-30) from the charity stripe en route to the team’s largest margin of victory on the year (33 points).
The win marked the Crimson Tide’s 13th win in its last 15 games as UA improved to 17-5 overall and 12-1 in Southeastern Conference play – the second-best start in league play in school history.
Forward Herbert Jones led five players in double figures with a career-high 21 points and led the team with five rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Freshman Joshua Primo scored 19 points – all of which came in the second half – while guard Jaden Shackelford added 18. Guards Jahvon Quinerly (16) and John Petty Jr. (13) also reached double figures for the Crimson Tide.
Georgia (12-8, 5-8 SEC) was led by K.D. Johnson’s 24 points and Sahvir Wheeler added 16 for the Bulldogs.
Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
“It’s good to finally see the ball go in again. It’s good to see Herb Jones a lot closer to 100 percent. He’s still not quite there, but man, did he look better. That makes our offense a whole lot better when Herb is playing explosive like he was. Defensively, we weren’t as good as we wanted to be, but that’s a good offensive team. They didn’t shoot it particularly well, which obviously helped us. We shot it well. We got to the free throw line and made free throws. We made threes. Outside of the turnovers on offense, I thought our offense was pretty good. They’re a really good offensive rebounding team. We held them to 28 percent offensive rebounding rate, which is lower than their average by a lot. We have some work to do. I’m really happy for the guys. We had 115 [points], which is an SEC record for points in a game. Darius’ (Miles) dunk he put down at the end. We know how talented that kid is. We’ve been trying to get him to put it all together, so I was really happy to see him be able to do that. I thought a lot of guys shot the ball well. It’s a feel-good win, but we definitely have some work to do on the defensive side of it.”
