
Alabama Finishes Day One at The Gators Invitational; Play Suspended Due to Darkness

The Crimson Tide will conclude the tournament’s second round on Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. CT
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 17 Alabama men's golf team opened the spring season on Friday at the Gators Invitational. The event, which was originally scheduled for 18 holes across three days, was forced to change format in order to get as many holes played on day one as possible due to the threat of impending weather this weekend.
The Crimson Tide carded a team score of 4-under par 276 in the opening 18 holes before beginning the second round in the afternoon. Alabama was surging up the leaderboard when play was halted, with all UA golfers having completed at least 12 of the 18 holes in round two.
Round One
- Wilson Furr paced the Crimson Tide in opening 18 hole of play, carding a 3-under par 67 which was his team-leading fourth round in the 60s in the 2020-21 campaign and 18th of his career
- Thomas Ponder carded a 2-under 68 in the opening round which was his fourth round in the 60s to match Furr for the team lead this season
- JP Cave finished at even par 70, while Canon Claycomb and Davis Shore each carded a 1-over 71
- Simms Abney, who was playing as an individual, shot a 5-over 75
Round Two
- When play was suspended due to darkness, the Crimson Tide was making a move up the leaderboard with four golfers currently below par in round two
- Furr finished 12 holes before halting play with a 1-under par and is currently in a tie for eighth overall at 4-under par for the event
- Shore had a bogey-free round when play was suspended (three birdies through his 15 holes) and is at 3-under par for his second round and 2-under for the event
- Claycomb is at 2-under par with three holes remaining in his second round, while Cave is at 1-under through 15
- Ponder rounds out the Tide midway through the second 18 holes at 3-over through 13, while Abney is at 4-over through 12
Tournament Finish
- The second round will resume at 7 a.m. CT (8 a.m. ET) on Saturday morning
- The third round will begin immediately after the conclusion of round two, if the weather allows
