
Alabama’s Rhyan White Advances to the FINA World Championships 100m Backstroke Final

The Crimson Tide standout is seeded second heading into the finals of the 100m backstroke at the World Championships
ABU DHABI – Alabama's Rhyan White moved from seventh to second between prelims and semifinals of the 100-meter backstroke at the FINA World Championships, which got underway Thursday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Seventh after the preliminary heats with a time of 56.76, White rocketed to second in the semifinals of the 100m backstroke with a 56.05 and is headed to Friday's finals which get underway at 8 a.m. CT. The Crimson Tide standout was fourth in both the 100m and 200m backstroke at last summer's Tokyo Olympiad.
In other Crimson Tide action from day one of the World Championships, Diana Petkova (Bulgaria) took 25th in the prelims of the 50m breaststroke with a time of 30.98, while Kaique Alves helped lead Brazil to the finals of the 400-meter freestyle relay with a fifth-place prelims finish. Alves swam the third leg in both prelims and finals, where Brazil was disqualified when its second leg left early.
Day Two Schedule in Abu Dhabi
- Due to the time difference, Friday's prelims are slated to get underway Thursday night at 11:30 p.m. CT, while finals get underway Friday at 8 a.m.
- Rhyan White (USA) is scheduled to swim the finals of the 100m backstroke at approximately 9:30 a.m. CT
- Kalia Antoniou (Greece) and Diana Petkova (Bulgaria) are slated to swim the prelims of the 100-meter freestyle
