
Alabama Volleyball Falls in Midweek Matchup at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Alabama volleyball fell to Mississippi State in three sets Wednesday night on the road.
Alabama (10-14, 2-10 SEC) fell to Mississippi State (18-5, 9-2 SEC) in straight sets, by scores of 15-25, 21-25 and 19-25. Laila Smith tied for the team lead with a season-high eight kills, hitting .400 with just two errors on 15 swings. Emily Janek tallied her team-leading seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 13 assists and 17 digs.
Tied at 3-3 in set one, Mississippi State scored six unanswered to lead 9-3 before Alabama looked to halt the momentum with a timeout. The Bulldogs continued to surge ahead, leading by double digits at the Tide's second timeout, 20-10, and winning the set by the same margin, 25-15. After another early tie in set two at 3-3, Mississippi State added some distance with a 9-3 run to make it 12-6. Following an Alabama timeout, the Tide would fight back within three in the closing points but MSU held on to win, 25-21.
The Bulldogs scored the first point of the third set but Alabama quickly responded with five unanswered, taking its first lead of the match. Mississippi State tied the score three times before retaking the lead, 9-8. Later trailing 18-13, the Tide rattled off four in a row to make it a one-point game which forced the Bulldogs to spend a timeout. Alabama took its last timeout two points later down 20-17 and eventually fell, 25-19, to complete the sweep.
