Alabama Swimming and Diving Breaks Three School Records on Day One of Tennessee Invitational

The Crimson Tide women bettered the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay marks while Derek Maas shaved more than a half second off the school 200 individual medley standard
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Alabama Swimming and Diving got the Tennessee Invitational off to a huge start Thursday at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn., throwing down a number of performances that rank in the Crimson Tide's all-time top 10, including a trio of school records.
The Alabama women opened and closed Thursday's finals by crushing the school 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays. Kalia Antoniou, Morgan Scott, Kailyn Winter and Cora Dupre got things started by going 1:26.38 to set a new standard in the 200 freestyle relay, bettering the old mark by more than half a second, and taking first overall.
Rhyan White, Avery Wiseman, Scott and Antoniou came back to close the first day of competition by decimating the 400 medley relay record, going 3:27.18, dropping the old mark by more than a second and a half, and taking second by a fraction of a second. White led off the relay with by going 50.15 in the 100 backstroke, just off her school record.
Derek Maas got the record smashing underway in prelims, shaving more than half a second off the 200 individual medley mark with a 1:43.13. He came back in finals to win the race with a 1:43.49.
Day One Highlights
- Alabama broke three records on day one of the Tennessee Invitational, including the women's 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay and the men's 200 individual medley
- The Crimson Tide men closed day one by winning the 400 medley relay, with Matt Menke, Derek Maas, Bernardo Bondra de Almeida and Jonathan Berneburg touching the wall with a 3:04.36
- Morgan Scott won the 50 freestyle with a career-best 21.80, which ranks her second all-time at UA, while Kalia Antoniou was second with a 21.84
- Kensey McMahon opened the individual events by winning in the women's 500 freestyle with a quick 4:38.76, just tenth of a second off her school record
- Rookie Charlie Hawke took second with a 4:18.03 in the men's 500 freestyle, which ranks him seventh all-time at UA
- Maas, Tyler Sesvold, Kaique Alves and Berneburg combined to go 1:18.04 in the 200 free relay to take third
- Tanesha Lucoe (279.25) took third off the 1-meter springboard
- Alabama put two in the top eight of the 3-meter springboard with Kevin Li (353.80) finishing third and Mohamed Farouk (343.55) taking fifth
- Berneburg finished fifth in the 50 freestyle with a 19.65
- Freshman Mela Delmenico cranked out a 4:44.02 to win the B final of the 500 freestyle, which ranks her fifth all-time at UA
- Rookie Kailyn Winter went 22.36 in the prelims of the 50 freestyle, which ranks her seventh all-time at Alabama
- In addition to Maas winning the finals of the 200 individual medley with a 1:43.49, Matt Menke (1:44.42) was second, Linus Kahl (1:45.45) was fourth and Nicholas Perera (1:45.67) was fifth
- Kahl's time ranks him eighth all-time for the Tide
- In the prelims of the 200 individual medley, Dupre went 1:56.83, which ranks her second all-time at Alabama, just .03 off the school record
- Avery Wiseman went 1:57.62 in the prelims of the 200 individual medley while Rhyan White went 1:58.26, which ranks them fourth and eighth all-time at UA, respectively

- Friday's prelims start at 9 a.m. for swimming and 12 p.m. for diving
- Friday's finals start at 4 p.m. for diving and 5 p.m. for swimming
- Saturday's prelims start at 9 a.m. with the timed finals of the 1,650 freestyle starting at 11 a.m. and diving prelims starting at 12:30 p.m.
- Saturday's finals start at 3:30 p.m.
- Friday's events include the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, women's 3-meter diving, men's 1-meter diving, 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay
