Former Alabama players continue to shine in week nine of the 2021 NFL season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The ninth week of the National Football League season wrapped up Monday. Below is a look at some of the highlights from week nine by former Crimson Tide players currently in the NFL.
Rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith led the way offensively for Philadelphia. The Heisman Trophy winner paced the Eagles in receptions with five on the day, totaling 116 yards and one touchdown. Joining Smith at wideout were his former teammates Jaylen Waddle and Jerry Jeudy. Waddle tallied a team-high eight catches for 83 yards to help the Miami Dolphins to a win over the Houston Texans. Jeudy posted a solid performance in his return from injury for the Broncos, recording a team-best six receptions for 69 yards to propel Denver to a win over the Dallas Cowboys.
On Monday Night Football, Pittsburgh running back Najee Harris provided an all-around effort to lead the Steelers past the Chicago Bears. Harris carried the ball 22 times for 62 yards and one touchdown, while adding three catches for 16 yards. The solid performance in primetime came a week removed from Harris being named the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Month for October.
The defensive performances were highlighted by Xavier McKinney's stellar game for the Giants on Sunday. McKinney recorded seven tackles, two pass breakups and two interceptions, returning one of the picks for a 41-yard score in the third quarter to help New York to a win over the Las Vegas Raiders. His pair of interceptions moved him to four for the year, putting McKinney in the top five in the league for picks this season.
Two more former Alabama defensive backs had solid performances for their respective teams. Levi Wallace collected seven total tackles, including one for loss, and added a pass breakup and a fumble recovery for the Buffalo Bills. Denver defensive back Kareem Jackson led the Broncos in tackles on the day, recording nine, including one for loss. Rounding out the defensive group, New York Jets veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley racked up 10 total tackles against the Indianapolis Colts.
