Abby Marjama earns her 1,000th career kill
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Alabama volleyball fell to South Carolina in Sunday's rematch at the Carolina Volleyball Center, with senior Abby Marjama earning her 1,000th career kill.
Marjama entered the match 13 shy of her 1,000th career kill, surpassing the mark in the third set and eventually finishing the match with a season-high 16. Alabama (10-11, 2-7 SEC) fought to closer scores in each subsequent set against South Carolina (12-8, 4-6 SEC), including a late 24-24 tie in the third.
After five tie scores early in the first set put it at 5-5, South Carolina started to gather some momentum with a 6-2 run to pull ahead 11-7. The lead increased to 15-9 at the media timeout and further at 19-10 before the Tide spent its first team timeout. The Gamecocks would keep Alabama at arm's length down the stretch, eventually winning 25-17.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair to start, but South Carolina rode a 5-1 run into the media timeout to lead 15-12. Alabama drew within one point twice after that but fell, 25-19. The score was tied at every point through 9-9 until the Gamecocks scored four in a row to start to build a lead. Later trailing 18-12, the Tide scored three unanswered to force a South Carolina timeout at 18-15 and kept fighting to tie it at 20-20 at the Gamecocks' second timeout. After three tie scores, Alabama reached set point at 24-23 only for South Carolina to tie it again at 24-24. After a Tide timeout, the Gamecocks scored twice to get the set win, 26-24, and take the match.
