Planinsek, Martin Win ITA Southern Regional Doubles Title

The Alabama doubles team qualifies for the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
AUBURN, Ala. – Filip Planinsek and Juan Martin won the ITA Southern Regional doubles title Monday, as the Alabama tennis players posted a semifinal and final win on the last day of competition at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Ala. With the win, the Crimson Tide duo earned a spot in the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, Calif.
Filip Planinsek and Juan Martin opened the day in the semifinals where the UA duo faced Alabama State's Ruan Du Preeze and Samrakshyak Bajracharya. The Tide took the first set 6-4 to gain the upper hand in the match. With momentum in their favor, Planinsek and Martin dominated the second set, dropping just two games to the Hornets to take the final set at 6-2.
Two hours later, the Crimson Tide partners were back on the court, battling LSU's Vlad Lobak and Gabriel Diaz Freire in the finals. Again, Planinsek and Martin started strong with a 6-2 first-set win. In a contested second set, the two teams sat tied at 5-5, then again at 6-6 to force a tiebreak. Planinsek and Martin edged the Tigers 7-4 to win the match in two sets and take home the regional crown.

As a team, we have more room for growth as our ability to compete and remain willing to face any challenge was definitely tested this weekend. There were both bright spots and chinks in the armor.
