Alabama Track & Field’s Opens the 2021 Indoor Season with Two Wins

Ryan Lipe and Kieran McKeag capture victories on day one of the Vanderbilt Commodore
NASHVILLE, TENN. – Alabama men's and women's track & field kicked off the new year with a strong start, winning two individual event titles on day one of the Vanderbilt Commodore Invitational Friday evening.
In the second field event of the night, Ryan Lipe picked up Alabama's first win of the 2021 indoor season in the men's pole vault. Then to cap off day one in Nashville, Kieran McKeag earned his first victory in the Alabama uniform in the men's weight throw.
Field Events
- Taylor Gorum set the stage in women's weight throw with a toss of 19.43m to place fifth
- Lipe secured the victory on just his fourth attempt (4.80m) but continued to compete, clearing 17'4.50" (5.30m)
- The UA women's long jump duo of Katie Lightfoot (16'11.25"/5.16m) and Camille Kohtala (16'8/5.08) placed eighth and ninth
- In his Crimson Tide debut, transfer McKeag bested the field with a throw of 66'11.50" (20.41m)
Track Events
- The women's 4000m DMR of Sydney Milani, Riley Schelp, Sophie Spada and Alex Wilkins finished runner-up with a time of 11:54.60
- Eliza Witherspoon (17:42.28) paced the UA women in the 5000m with fourth place finish, while Alexa Cruz (5th, 17:54.66) and Haley Wright (7th, 18:14.87) rounded out the lineup
- For the men's 5000m, Noel Rotich (14:44.44) led the way with a third-place finish, while the trio of Jack Hawes (5th 15:08.21), Mateo Barreto (6th, 15:27.38) and Paul Selden (7th, 15:39.35) followed after
Day two of the Vanderbilt Commodore Invitational begins Saturday at noon CT with the women's shot put. Spectators are not allowed for the meet, but a live stream is available on YouTube, as well as live results online.
