COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Alabama swimmer Liam Bell has earned a place on the United States Junior National Team for the second year in a row, USA Swimming announced recently.
Bell enjoyed a breakout rookie season at Alabama in 2020, winning Southeastern Conference gold as part of the Tide's 400 medley relay and taking silver in the 100 breaststroke. A three-time All-American, he earned First Team CSCAA Scholar All-America honors and was named both First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman.
The Atlanta, Ga., native set the school record in the 100 breaststroke (51.39) and 200 individual medley (1:44.35) with career-best times at the 2020 SEC Championships, shaving nearly a second off his 100 breaststroke mark and nearly four seconds off his 200 IM time. He also swam the breaststroke leg on the school and SEC Championships record-setting 400 medley relay (3:02.17).
The youngest male to qualify for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, Bell has already qualified for the 2021 trials. He won the USA Junior National Championship in the 100-meter breaststroke in 2019, posting a 1:01.19, the ninth-fastest time ever for 17-18 men in the United States, winning the race by over a second. He also earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke with a career-best mark of 2:15.17.
