Bienvenidos a Miami
It's game day! Our football team arrived in Miami on Friday for the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. What an incredible season it has been through some challenging times, and we are thrilled to be playing in our fifth championship game in the last six years. Tonight's kick against No. 3 Ohio State is set for 7 p.m. CT at Hard Rock Stadium.
Wherever you may be cheering on the Tide from tonight, we encourage you to do so responsibly and safely as we are still battling the COVID-19 pandemic. Be sure to wear your mask, be mindful of your distance from one another and avoid large gatherings.
Congratulations to our National Award Winners
Our football team had several individuals awarded with national honors last week, including DeVonta Smith, who became Alabama's third Heisman Trophy winner and first wide receiver to win the award since 1991. Smith also took home the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award, Biletnikoff Award and the Paul Hornung Award. Joining Smith with national honors are Mac Jones (Davey O'Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award), Alex Leatherwood (Outland Trophy), Najee Harris (Doak Walker Award), Landon Dickerson (Rimington Trophy), Thomas Fletcher (Patrick Mannelly Award) and the offensive line (Joe Moore Award).
Big Week of Basketball
Our men's and women's basketball teams are in the midst of winning streaks in SEC play with the men winning their first four league games, while the women have won their last two. The men's 4-0 start in conference play, capped off by a 94-90 win at Auburn on Saturday, is their best start since 1987. The women picked up back-to-back wins at home vs. LSU and then on the road at Vanderbilt to move to 10-1 overall. Both teams have midweek road contests this week before returning home for weekend matchups with Arkansas and Tennessee. Tickets are on sale for the women's game against the Lady Vols, which tips at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Winter Is Heating Up
Our gymnastics and men's tennis teams both got things started over the weekend in Tuscaloosa. Coming off a strong fall campaign, men's tennis hosted the Bama Spring Shootout where they won 19 matches, while our gymnastics team had a dominant season-opening performance against No. 12 Kentucky, winning 196.850-195.825.
Welcome, Margo Geer
Just after Christmas, Coley Stickels made the decision to step down as head coach of our swimming and diving program to focus on training a select group of pro swimmers for the 2021 Olympics and beyond. We were fortunate to have an exceptional candidate in house in 2015 World Champion and four-time Pan American Games gold medalist Margo Geer. Margo, who is training for the Tokyo Olympics, will take the reins once her competitive career concludes. While Margo continues her training, associate head coach Ozzie Quevedo will serve as our interim head coach. An NCAA Champion and 2000 Olympian, Ozzie has a wealth of coaching experience and we appreciate his stepping into this role and making the transition as seamless as possible. We are excited to have Ozzie at the helm for the rest of this season as we continue what has already been a strong showing, and we also know that with Margo leading the way, our future is bright indeed.
