The Crimson Tide senior took Vanderbilt’s Harrison Ott to sudden death, falling after 19 holes
BANDON, Ore. – Alabama senior golfer Wilson Furr's run in the 120th United States Amateur Championship came to an end on Thursday afternoon, falling to Harrison Ott of Vanderbilt in the first hole of sudden death in the round of 32.
The second-round match was tight throughout as both SEC standouts halved 11 of the 19 holes on the day. After going down two holes early, Ott owned a 2up lead as the players made the turn. However, similar to the previous rounds, Furr caught fire on the back nine as he won three of the next four holes to take a 1up lead.
He held that lead heading into the par 5, 524-yard 18th hole, however, Ott birdied and Furr settled for par to send the match to extra holes. Ott would go on to birdie the next hole to advance to the round of 16.
"I think I learned a lot," Furr said. "We have been working on my game throughout the summer and I feel like it all clicked and came together this week. The U.S. Amateur is a strange format with both stroke play and match play, but I felt great over the four days I played, so I definitely feel good about that. It stings a lot to lose but I am leaving with a lot of positives."
Despite falling in Thursday's match, Furr had one of the most memorable U.S. Amateur runs by an Alabama men's golfer in recent memory. He became just the second Crimson Tide golfer to capture U.S. Amateur stroke play medalist honors when he set an 18-hole Bandon Trails competitive course record of 9-under par 62 during Tuesday's second round of stroke play. That round also marked the second-best single round score in a U.S. Amateur and United States Golf Association (USGA)Â history.
Overall, the Jackson, Miss., native combined to shoot 19-under par across the four days he competed at this year's event.
Furr, who finished stroke play at 11-under par 132 (70-62) joined Bobby Wyatt (2012) as the only other UA golfer to claim medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur championship. Former Crimson Tide standout Jerry Pate remains the only Alabama player to ever hoist The Havemeyer Trophy.
