The Crimson Tide senior defeated Aaron Du 6&4 in the round of 64 on Tuesday
BANDON, Ore. – Fresh off setting an 18-hole course record on Tuesday which earned him stroke play medalist honors at the 2020 U.S. Amateur Championship, Alabama senior Wilson Furr continued his red-hot play as he rolled past Aaron Du of China 6&4 in Wednesday's opening round of match play.
Furr, who earned the No. 1 overall seed with his stroke-play victory, advances to the round of 32 where he will square off against Vanderbilt's Harrison Ott for the right to move on to the U.S. Amateur round of 16.
"In the past I've played well in windy conditions because I just think it makes me focus a little more," Furr said following Wednesday' win. "I can't just step up there and hit which has been a problem of mine in the past. I have to think through the shots a little more and it just plays to my advantage. I know Harrison and he is a really good player. You're not going to get handed any matches at this stage because you're going up against some of the best amateur golfers in the world. I am going to just focus on me and try to keep doing what I've been doing."
Furr kept the momentum going from his second-round, record-setting performance in which he set the Bandon Trails competitive course record with his 9-under par 62. It was also the lowest 18-hole mark in a U.S. Amateur and United States Golf Association (USGA) history on the way to becoming just the second Alabama golfer to win the U.S. Am stroke-play medal, joining Bobby Wyatt who won medalist honors in 2012.
After dropping the first hole of Wednesday's match against Du, Furr won each of the next two holes to take a 1up lead through three. The score remained that way until Du birdied on the par 3 sixth hole to draw even.
With Furr clinging to a 1up lead at the turn, the Jackson, Miss., native once again caught fire, winning five consecutive holes on the back nine to seal the victory and advance.
Furr and Ott will tee off as the first match of the day at 9 a.m. CT on the par 71, 6,863-yard Bandon Dunes course. Live scoring can be found on USGA.org.
