
Three Finish Under Par to Lead Alabama in the Opening Round of the Puerto Rico Classic

Wilson Furr and Thomas Ponder closed day one at 2-under, Canon Claycomb at 1-under to lead the Crimson Tide on day one
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Junior Wilson Furr and freshman Thomas Ponder each carded rounds of 2-under par 70, while freshman Canon Claycomb added a 1-under 71 in his debut, to lead the Alabama men's golf team in the opening day of the Puerto Rico Classic. Thanks in large part to their performance, the Crimson Tide finished the round with a team total of 3-under par 285 and is in a tie for third entering Monday's second round action.
Alabama finished round one in a tie with No. 18 Georgia at 285. Both the Tide and the Bulldogs sit four strokes back of clubhouse leader and No. 2-ranked Oklahoma (281) and No. 3 Georgia Tech (282). Tournament host Purdue and No. 23 Clemson round out the top five tied at 286.
Day One Highlights
- Ponder got as low as 5-under par before a bogey on No. 16 and a double bogey on No. 18 resulted in his third round of par or lower during the 2019-20 season
- Furr caught fire on the back nine with three birdies over a five-hole stretch from No. 11-15 to finish under par for the team-leading fourth time in 10 holes of tournament play this season
- Both Furr and Ponder are in a tie for seventh overall, just two strokes back of the individual lead
- Claycomb, who enrolled in classes this spring and is playing in his first collegiate event, showed well with a 1-under par 71 to finish in a tie for 18th overall
- Sophomore Frankie Capan III is in a tie for 43rd at 2-over 74, while senior Jake DeZoort rounds out the Tide with an 82
- Ponder's six birdies on the day led the Tide, while Furr and Claycomb had four apiece

- This year will mark 16th consecutive year the Crimson Tide has competed in the event
