
Alabama Cards Lowest Round of the Year on Day Two of Puerto Rico Classic

All five Crimson Tide starters shoot at or below par to help the team maintain third place overall after 36 holes of play
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – All five Alabama golfers finished Monday's second round even or under par on the way to a season-best 18-hole team score of 12-under par 276 on day two of the Puerto Rico Classic. UA will enter Tuesday's final round in third place overall with a 36-hole total of 15-under 561 (285-276).
Both the 18-hole score on Monday and 36-hole total are season-best marks for the Crimson Tide, which is playing in its fourth stroke play event of the 2019-20 campaign and first this spring.
Individual Play
- Leading the way for Alabama is junior Wilson Furr who carded a 4-under-par 68 on Saturday to move into a fifth-place tie overall with a two-day total of 6-under 138 (70-68)
- Freshman Thomas Ponder is not far behind, carding a round of 3-under-par 69 after a 2-under 70 on Sunday to end the day in a tie for ninth overall at 5-under 139
- Sophomore Frankie Capan III is the third Alabama golfer to rank among the top-20 individuals after 36 holes, as he is in a tie at 16th position with a 3-under 141 (74-67) after firing the team's low round of Monday with a 5-under 67
- Freshman Canon Claycomb and senior Jake DeZoort each shot even par 72 on the day to round out Alabama's scores. Claycomb will come into the final round in a tie for 32nd with a 1-under 143 (71-72), while DeZoort rounds out the Tide in 67th overall at 154 (82-72).
Team Play
- Entering the final round of play, the Tide is nine strokes back of clubhouse leader and No. 2-ranked Oklahoma (552), while No. 3 Georgia Tech (550) is in second overall, seven strokes ahead of UA
- Alabama holds a one-stroke lead over No. 23 Clemson (562) for third overall
- A pair SEC teams, No. 18 Georgia (565) and No. 34 Ole Miss (570) round out the top five teams, respectively, in the 15-team field
Second Round Highlights
- Furr, who earned his team-best 14th round in the 60s, got red hot on the back nine when he shot 5-under par including five birdies over a seven-hole span. In all, he opened the day at two over through the first seven but birdied seven of the next nine holes to result in the 5-under par round
- Claycomb began the second round on fire by recording birdies in six of his first 10 holes of the day before three bogeys and a triple bogey resulted in his even par total
- Ponder earned five birdies over a six-hole span to help him record his second round in the 60s this season
- Capan tied Claycomb for the team lead in birdies on Monday with seven on his way to the lowest round he has this season
- In all, Alabama golfers made 27 birdies on the day compared to 12 holes of bogey or worse
