Wendell Hudson Recognition Weekend
We look forward to welcoming back Wendell Hudson and his family to Tuscaloosa this weekend as we honor him and his legacy as Alabama's first African American scholarship athlete. Wendell joined the Crimson Tide men's basketball team 50 years ago and went on to become a First Team All-American and Alabama's first SEC Player of the Year as a senior in 1973. His two-day, campus-wide celebration will culminate at halftime of the men's basketball game on Saturday, where his jersey will be the first to be retired in Alabama Athletics' history. In addition, our teams in the midst of their competitive seasons will wear a WH patch or helmet sticker in his honor for the remainder of this academic year. We hope you will join us on Saturday for what will surely be a memorable ceremony for all.
Limited Tickets Remaining for Men's Basketball on Saturday
Speaking of Saturday's men's basketball game versus LSU, we have less than 800 tickets remaining, so secure yours soon if you're planning on coming! Reminder that we are giving away 2,500 hard hats courtesy of Coca-Cola Energy. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. for the 3 p.m. tip.
Golden Flake A-Day Game set for April 18
Our annual Golden Flake A-Day spring football game will be played at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. Due to the ongoing construction, seating will be limited to approximately 30,000-35,000 fans on the east and south sides. Once capacity has been reached, Sewell-Thomas Stadium will be available for overflow space where we will broadcast the game on the video board. We will also open restrooms and concessions for fans who opt to stay and view the game there. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the weekend.
Baseball Hosts Northeastern for Opening Weekend
Our baseball team opens its 2020 season this weekend in Tuscaloosa, hosting Northeastern for a three-game series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday's tilt will get underway at 12 p.m. As part of his recognition weekend, Wendell Hudson will throw out Saturday's honorary first pitch, which will take place at approximately 11:45 a.m. The series will then wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m. Here is to hoping Mother Nature cooperates with us, and we are able to avoid rain!
Gymnastics Hosts Arkansas for Alumni Night
Coming off a season-best performance last weekend, our gymnastics team is back in action Friday at 5:45 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum against Arkansas. It will be Alumni Night with past generations of Alabama gymnasts coming back to cheer on this year's squad. It will also be "I Love the 80s" night in the coliseum with lots of giveaways, including T-shirts, fanny packs and sweatbands.
Easton Bama Bash on Deck for Softball
After playing its first two tournaments on the road, our softball team begins the home portion of its schedule next weekend when we host the Easton Bama Bash Friday through Sunday. Joining us in Tuscaloosa will be Louisville, Penn State and Wichita State. I also want to thank all of you who have helped us surpass the 2,600 mark for season tickets sold. What an incredible feat!
Men's and Women's Golf Begin Spring Seasons
Best of luck to our men's and women's golf teams as they begin the spring portion of their seasons on Sunday and Monday, respectively. The men will head to Rio Mar Beach for the Puerto Rico Classic, while the women will take part in the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida.
Alabama Aquatic Center and Don Gambril Olympic Pool Grand Reopening
We recently celebrated the grand reopening of the Alabama Aquatic Center and Don Gambril Olympic Pool with a great event on the deck of the pool. We're proud of our new state-of-the-art facility, which gives our men's and women's swimming and diving teams a championship-level facility to train and compete in. It was great to see the legendary Don Gambril in attendance along with so many others who have had a hand in lifting our program to the great heights it has enjoyed over the years. We also wish this year's teams the best of luck as they head to the SEC Championships next week in Auburn.
SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll Honor
We're proud of our 78 student-athletes from football, soccer, volleyball and cross country who earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll this fall. That total includes 19 from volleyball and 11 from soccer, totals that led the league in their respective sports. The SEC will release a winter and spring honor roll in the months to come and recognize its first-year student-athletes based on grades from the fall and spring semester with an honor roll that is released in June.
More Academic Honors
Congratulations to our men's and women's cross country teams that were honored with the Team Academic Award by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). We also had five student-athletes who were recognized on the All-Academic Team, including senior Rebecca Buteau, sophomore Mercy Chelangat and freshman Allison Wilson from the women's team and seniors Gilbert Kigen and Vincent Kiprop from the men's squad. Congratulations to Dan Waters and his teams on a great season on the course and in the classroom.
Power of Pink Success
Congratulations to our gymnastics and women's basketball teams for successful Power of Pink events this past weekend. The gymnastics team posted a season-best 197.550 to earn the win over Missouri, while women's basketball picked up a thrilling 68-64 win over Auburn to give them the sweep over our in-state rival for the first time since 2002. Just as important, both events helped raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer, honoring survivors, caregivers and all who have been affected by this terrible disease.
The Crimson Standard Update
Support for The Crimson Standard has been incredible. New premium seats in the Founders Suites, Loge Boxes and Terrace Club are sold out. If you are interested in new premium seating at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the 2020 Alabama Football season, limited inventory remains in the Champions Club and seats are selling fast. Reserve your seats today by calling The Crimson Tide Foundation at (205) 348-9727.
University Spotlight
Last week, it was announced that C.T. and Kelley Fitzpatrick were making a $20 million comprehensive gift to the Culverhouse College of Business and athletics, which we are extremely grateful for. We thank the Fitzpatricks for designating $5 million of their contribution to The Crimson Standard, our 10-year capital initiative, as gifts such as these are helping us prepare for the future of Alabama Athletics.
#RollTideFriday
Since it's rainy and cold here, let's check out some of our more tropical #RollTideFriday photo submissions this week. First, we have the Bama Moms of the @RollTideRaleigh group on a cruise to the Bahamas, and secondly, we have Greg Hulsey checking in from Turks & Caicos.
