TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Redshirt junior Shelby Gibson has decided to medically retire from college basketball, she announced on Monday. Gibson will remain a part of the Alabama women's basketball next season, while working on a master's degree towards a career in athletics administration.
"Shelby is a special young lady that has been a great addition to our program," said head coach Kristy Curry. "We are sad that she cannot compete on the court anymore, but she is doing what is best for her long-term health and she has our complete support."
Gibson sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules after transferring from Ole Miss after playing two years in Oxford. Gibson played in nine games for the Tide this season before exiting with a foot injury in December.
